The Verb101 is an up and coming Hip Hop artist who took to the studio seven years ago and recorded his Rap album titled The Speakeasi and after a few hurdles and stumbling blocks, the full-length album was finally completed. The Speakeasi was a self-funded project and was executive produced by Lwande Makohliso who is also involved in the engineering of the album.
This album was first released as a six track EP in the year 2015 on the 8th of June. The Speakeasi EP was released through an independent record label, Speakeasi Productions and sold a total of 332 units in various Hip Hop festivals and social markets in and around the Johannesburg and Pretoria region. The EP contained a few “sleeper-hits” one of them song being, “Pearl Moody” which is a radio single that helped The Verb101 gain a bit of recognition in the SA music scene, the song glorified SA’s sexy and beautiful TV and Radio personality Pearl Modiadie.
A year later The Verb101 decided to release his EP to online-stores such as iTunes, Spotify, GooglePlay and Deezer just to name a few. Now the official album is available on all online stores and The Verb101 decided to repackage it by adding never heard before album material including a bonus documentary which contains footage of the making of this album.
This record paints a vivid picture of his hustle and the struggles of making it into the music industry but tells a story of glory, on how an artist can make it on his own without having to sign to a major record company. The Verb101 created his own unique sound based on what his own record label, Speakeasi productions, would offer to a musical enthusiast who loves Rap music in it’s most purest form. If you are looking for those nostalgic samples and discoinfused and yet timeless sounds, this album is for you. Album production was handled by Makwa Beats and Ayanda “DayDreamer” Nkosi.
