A South African boy who grew up in Lesotho, however born in Free State, spent most of his young life
oblivious to his musical talents until he moved to Rustenburg (North-West Province) in 2000 where he
was exposed to some of hip hop’s finest. Building from this exposure he wrote his first verse on his way
back home from primary school. Taken from what he just realized was within him, Rethabile Thejane
also known as Rap$ made a decision about his future not many young man would make, he decided to
spend his life making music, hip hop music, while many artist will struggle to establish their own musical
identity, at that early age he was in full command of his craft and still remains.
2009 he dropped out of collage to further this passion, so in 2010 he enrolled to Soul Candi Institute
of Music in order to be a professional music composer. While studying he worked with a couple of other
professional musicians namely: Rasegantsho also known as Ntjapedie as well William, the man behind
the popular “Hade Mabebeza (VaalSow). Later in the year he released his second mix-tape which he
produced himself alongside Mr Obvdo from Botswana and his cousin V-Underground who is a SAMA
As his music started taking shape and form, 2011 was the year he started working on a unique form,
fusing different elements of music. Being new to this, he worked hard, putting his blood, sweat and
tears in molding this unique form of music, his hard work paid off when the first product of this fusion
“Fun 2 Nyt” managed to hit the number one spot on the reverb nation top 10 hip-hop dance charts.
Even with this, the track didn’t get the exposure it deserved, but this didn’t discourage young Rap$ if
anything, it motivated him.
With his never say die spirit, in 2012 he got signed to Lebone Entertainment as an artist, producer and
2014 marked the year that would officially open doors for this young and passionate man, he released
his third mixed-tape, “Fresh Start” which is still available on hotnewhiphop.com. To mark his “Fresh
Start” he recorded songs with the legendary “Tuks Senganga” and DJ Zai Maya from Yfm, both these
tracks received airplay on Yfm, Ukhozi and many more National and local radio stations. In the same
year he also produced beats for Infa Dizle, who was a member of Skwatta Kamp, Adrianto Ngwana
Mosotho and Shay- Nyc, daughter of International Dj Scoop.
“My dad sang in a choir, My mum was a huge Abba fan… Music was a joyful Inevitability”
After all the producing, Rap$ decided that, with word of his producer talents making it’s rounds, there
was no better time than that to start a company of his own, where he would be able to produce beats
for himself and other artist with the same vision for music. So 2015 “Road to Riches” was born. Out of
the birth of Road to Riches, Rap$ was newly inspired and worked on two projects namely: “Back in High
School” which is his official single and his fourth mix-tape “Road to Riches”. The mixed tape consists of
23 songs which were mostly produced by him. To top all that off, he started working on his first video
for “Back in High School” which is available on YouTube :
