@simmysimmynya – Look At NYA

Hi, I trust you are well!

I recently dropped a tape that I think would be a great edition to your online magazine. The full length project is titled “Look At NYA” and consists of 14 tracks and one bonus track. Production is mainly handled by my go-to composer Psyc’ (@Psychedelic_AK) and it has 2 features in Xwaeno Lennon (from my hometown Pietermaritzburg) and OhGooch.

Press Release:

Look At Nya is a look in to the life of Simphiwe Peta, formerly known by his stage name simmysimmynya. The project is a sort of introspection in to the multiple personalities encompassing simmysimmynya. It highlights his diversity whether in his lyrical dexterity in English or native tongue of isiZulu, the contrasting subject matters ranging from being lit at the night show, to fighting internal demons that go hand in hand with growing up as a young black South African and an overall sonic experience.

Look At Nya dispels misconceptions of the artist, a major one being that nya is a trap artist. The project will include a few of the artists’ different inspirations ranging from Pop, RnB and the massive umbrella which is hip hop which includes the trap and the boom bap styles etc. Look At Nya shows you the story behind the scenes. All the music on it is based on real life experiences. People who don’t know you only know what they see on social media which can obscure perceptions. This is where the separation between Simphiwe and simmysimmynya comes in. The success of your alter ego does not equate the success of your life as a whole. The project aims to lay bare some of the trials and tribulations faced by Simphiwe as opposed to the success being generated by nya.

The music industry is starting to take notice of nya and it feels like people are watching the steps he takes. People see nya in a different light to the one he sees himself in. This project serves to show that:“what it be and what you see, when you’re looking at me, ain’t the same, my life ain’t nothing like what it seems”

Simphiwe Peta aka simmysimmynya is a musician based in Cape Town who was born and bred in Pietermaritzburg. At an early age he had a keen interest for music, joining talent shows, and started recording his own music at the age of 16. By matric he became a permanent fixture in a rock band called ‘Offshore’ which led to opening performances for Khaya Mthethwa and Prime Circle.

Since coming to Cape Town he has built himself a cult like following dropping bangers, most notably “Medicine”, on his soundcloud page culminating into an EP called TRAPNYA which invariably led to performing at all the major clubs in Cape Town, including a successful coming out party hosted by Groove Afrika dubbed Nya13 at Chez Ntemba International. He has since performed at major events such as Pop Bottles, Big Bash, WavesXV, iPotsoyi Spring Festival, Cape Town’s Most Wanted and most notably Rocking The Daisies. He is part of a rap collective called Contra Gang. He has shared stages with the likes of AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana and Black Motion to name a few, as well as headlined alongside Ricky Rick, Nasty C and Emtee.

His versatility and unorthodox approach to music is his strength; his lyrical prowess is showcased in vernac or English. He is an act to look out for in the near future and most importantly, don’t forget the Nya!
